Abstract

The invention relates to a method for treating a textile to inhibit wicking and/or provide durable water repellency. The method includes applying one or more first coating solutions to at least one surface of a material substrate and curing the first coating solution under ambient atmospheric pressure to form one or more water-repellent layers on the material substrate. The first coating solution and water-repellent layer are fluorine free and water free. The first coating solution includes one or more first chemical components having a Si—H group, one or more second chemical components having an alkene group, and one or more catalyst agents that cause a specific chemical reaction between the Si—H group and alkene group to link the first chemical component to the second chemical component.

Abstract

Solid-state branching and/or crosslinking of aliphatic polyamide or polyester articles is achieved using a topical approach. A surface of the article is coated with a composition that includes a polyene and a free radical initiator. The article and applied coating are then heated to induce branching and/or crosslinking in the polyamide or polyester. This is performed below the crystalline melting temperature of the polyamide or polyester, or in the case of a fabric, below the melting temperature of the fibers in the fabric. Fabrics treated in this manner exhibit reduced or even no dripping in vertical flame tests.

Abstract

Fabrics are treated with a hydrophobic treatment that includes at least one hydrophobic monomer and a crosslinker. The treatment is low in volatile organic compounds and water. It is a liquid at 22° C. or a suspension having a phase that is liquid at 22° C. The monomer and crosslinker are cured in a free radical polymerization to form a hydrophobic coating on a fibrous substrate.

Abstract

Substrates are coated with a curable composition that includes at least one free radical polymerizable monomer and a heat-activated polymerization initiator. The coating is applied to the substrate and cured thereon to produce the coating. Curing is performed by purging molecular air from the vessel containing the substrate, pressuring with an oxygen-deficient gas and then curing the fabric in the oxygen-deficient gas at elevated pressure and temperature.
