Abstract

A microwave guide suitable for carrying microwaves between an object that is vibrating that is connected to a first end of the guide and an object connected to the other end of the guide that is to be protected from transmitted vibrations, the guide providing a restricted path for the transmission of vibrations. In one embodiment, the guide has a flexible mesh part having an inner surface which has high electric conductivity and is provided with a plurality openings. The openings may be sufficiently small such that microwave radiation is unable to pass through the opening. The guide may also include a support structure which extends along the length of the guide. The support structure may have a low dielectric loss tangent and may be sufficiently rigid to provide support to the mesh part.

Abstract

A microwave guide (fig. 1) suitable for carrying microwaves between an object that is vibrating that is connected to a first end of the guide and an object connected to the other end of the guide that is to be protected from transmitted vibrations, the guide providing a restricted path for the transmission of vibrations. The guide comprises a flexible mesh part (9) having an inner surface (10) which has high electric conductivity and is provided with a plurality openings, each opening being sufficiently small that microwave radiation is unable to pass through, and a support structure (4) which extends along the length of the guide and which has a low dielectric loss tangent and which is sufficiently rigid to provide support to the mesh part, in which the mesh part comprises a braided, woven, knitted or otherwise interlaced material (textile), which in use flexes as the threads of the material slide over one another, or move relative to one another, and in which the mesh part comprises a first flexible sleeve that extends along the length of the guide, the support structure and first flexible sleeve being arranged concentrically around a common axis, the sleeve being a loose fit around the first support structure.

Abstract

Apparatus suitable for the heat treatment of a bulk feedstock comprises a receptacle (101) suitable for receiving a bed of feedstock, an inlet (111) through which microwaves may pass to enter the receptacle (101), causing the feedstock bed to heat up due to volumetric heating effects to release inbound moisture to regions within the bed, a stock of reusable agitator elements (200) mixed within the bed of feedstock, the elements preferentially absorbing at least some of the microwave energy thereby heating up to cause additional heating of the moisture or vapour or gas released from the feedstock, and a vibratory means (110) which is operable to cause the receptacle to vibrate and agitate the feedstock and agitator elements and the released liquid or vapour in the receptacle so as to produce a fluidised bed of feedstock, in which the agitator elements are shaped so as to assist in the formation and collapse of microvoids within the bed to drive released moisture of vapour out of the bed.

Abstract

A microwave heating apparatus (100) comprises a thin walled receptacle (110, 120, 130, 140) within which a bulk material (160) to be heated can be received; and one or more elongate structural reinforcing members (170, 180, 190) secured to, or forming an integral part of, the receptacle which provide rigidity to the receptacle, at least one of the elongate reinforcing members defines a channel through which microwave energy can pass along the member, and further in that the reinforcing member includes one or more openings (175, 185, 195) which permit the energy guided along member to exit the member and enter the receptacle thereby to heat any material in the receptacle.

Abstract

A launcher for microwave radiation comprises an elongate guide part,a surround part which surrounds a length of the guide part,at least one inwardly facing baffle provided on an inner face of the surround part and extending towards the guide part; and at least one outwardly facing baffle provided on an outer face of the guide part which is spaced axially along the guide part relative to the at least one inwardly facing baffle and faces outwards towards the inner surface of the surround part. The baffle(s) together with the guide part and the surround part define a labyrinth seal which in use acts as a choke to prevent microwaves escaping by passing though the gap between the guide part and surround part, and are arranged so that in at least one position of the surround part and the guide part there is no direct mechanical path from the surround part to the guide part, the parts being free to move relative to one another in at least one direction from that position without creating a direct rigid mechanical path from the surround to the guide part.
