Abstract
A stable, low pH aqueous silicate suspension is disclosed for modifying wood article(s). The suspension includes: a metal silicate having a solution concentration of from 1.5 wt % to 52 wt % and characterized by a modulus of from about 1.8 to about 4.0; at least one of a protic acid solution and a buffering acid solution in an amount effective to acidify the metal silicate to a pH of 3.0 or less, preferably to a pH between 1.0 and 3.0; and a multivalent metal salt having a solution concentration from 5 wt % to 25 wt %. The suspension has a pH of 3.0 or less. Wood articles impregnated with the suspension and processes for modifying wood articles with the suspension are also disclosed. The stable, low pH aqueous silicate suspensions provide for an increased depth of impregnation into wood articles as compared with conventional silicate treatments.

Abstract

Abstract
This disclosure relates to a process for manufacturing a flame-retardant, glued engineered wood article. The process comprises providing an engineered wood component treated by impregnation with a metal silicate solution, exposing the metal-silicate treated engineered wood component to an adhesive, and bonding multiple units of the metal-silicate treated engineered wood via the adhesive to form a flame-retardant, glued engineered wood article. This disclosure also relates to a flame-retardant, glued engineered wood article prepared by the processes described herein.

Abstract
A transformation of an existing, conventional southern yellow pine (SYP) lumber pressure treatment plant that previously impregnated wood with non-sustainable chemicals, to using environmentally friendly sodium silicate formulations. The transformation may include adding heated storage tanks for solutions of siliceous solutions and adding a heater to an existing storage tank, installing delivery lines capable of handling high pH, viscous solutions between at least the pre-existing vacuum pressure impregnation tank and the added or existing heated storage tank, a CO2 storage tank with associated vaporizer and a CO2 recovery system, associated lines to and from the pre-existing vacuum pressure impregnation tank and the CO2 storage tank and the CO2 recovery system, pumps for circulating the solutions, and a thermal management system including: insulation and cladding on one or more of the tanks and lines, heat tracing on all level indicators; and insertion of heating coils in working tanks.
