A pretreatment solution for treating fabric including an aqueous solution of 0.5 weight percent to 15 weight percent of a multivalent cationic salt; 0.1 weight percent to 3 weight percent of a blocked isocyanate crosslinking agent; 0.1 weight percent to 15 weight percent of an acrylic polymer; and 0.2% weight percent to 10% weight percent of an acid.

A direct to substrate printing assembly including a substrate, an ink printing station wherein the ink printing station is configured to print an ink layer onto the substrate, a binder application station wherein the binder application station is configured to dispose a binder onto the ink layer, a curing station, and a transfer station wherein the assembly is configured to transfer the ink layer and the binder layer disposed on the substrate to an article and wherein the assembly is fully automated. Disclosed is a process for printing on cotton fabric comprising (1) contacting cotton fabric with an aqueous solution comprising (A) 40% to 70% by weight of at least one multivalent cationic salt; (B) optionally 0.1% to 5% by weight of a blocked isocyanate crosslinking agent, and (C) 3% to 40% by weight of a waterborne resin, all percentages based on the weight of the aqueous solution; (2) drying the cotton fabric to remove the water from the cotton fabric; and (3) digitally printing the pretreated and coated cotton fabric with a water-based textile ink.
