Abstract

Systems and methods of compounding of medication include a user interface that enables efficient design of compounding workflows and protocols. A user can select a workflow type from a number of workflow types differentiated at least in part by the vehicle in which a compounded pharmaceutical is to be delivered, and the user may also specify a compounding device. Options are presented and the steps of a workflow in accordance with the workflow type and options is displayed and updated in real time as options are selected. A protocol can be constructed by inserting information into the workflow based on a specification of a particular pharmaceutical to be compounded.

Abstract

A system for compounding of medications includes a number of computerized compounding devices and a central server computer. Each of the compounding devices is in bidirectional communication with the central server computer via an electronic network. The central server computer and the plurality of compounding devices are configured to cooperatively receive, at the central server computer, a plurality of requests, at least some of which require the compounding of one or more medications, and push, by the central server computer via the electronic network, assignments of respective compounding tasks to the plurality of compounding devices. The central server computer is configured to assign respective compounding tasks to the plurality of compounding devices in accordance with a set of rules designed to promote efficient use of compounding resources and avoid waste. The compounding devices perform the assigned compounding tasks, or guide human operators in the performance of the compounding tasks.

Abstract

Systems and methods for compounding pharmaceuticals, for example for intravenous delivery. The devices include an infrared camera and an infrared light source, and can backlight and photograph items such as syringes in infrared light for enhanced clarity. A visible light camera may also be provided, for example a color digital camera, for documenting other parts of the compounding process. The device may have other sensors, for example a bar code scanner and a weight sensor, for collecting other data about the compounding process. In one example implementation, the device is a compounding assistance device that leads a user of the device through a compounding task using instructions shown on a display. In other implementations, the device may be robotic.

Abstract

An expanding needle is provided that includes a tubular body having a proximal end, a needle-tipped distal end, and a lumen extending therebetween. The expanding needle also includes a longitudinal seam formed on the tubular body. The tubular body is configured to uncurl radially, along the longitudinal seam, thereby transitioning the tubular body from a contracted state to an expanded state to increase an inner diameter of the lumen. In certain embodiments, the tubular body is formed by, for example, a continuous flexible sheet rolled in a lengthwise direction. In that case, the longitudinal seam is defined by a portion of a side of the flexible sheet overlapping an opposing side of the flexible sheet. An expanding needle device, including an expanding needle seated to a needle hub, and a method of increasing an inner diameter of an expanding needle are also provided herein.
