Abstract

A permanent magnet electric rotating machine and control system is described. A plurality of phase windings may be energized by a single excitation current from a power supply. A commutation circuit, operationally independent of the power supply, is operative to control a timing and duration of supply of the excitation current transmitted to or drawn from individual of the phase windings. The commutation circuit further comprises a delay timer, said delay timer accounting for phase lag in the current pulse compared to the back EMF from the permanent magnet electric rotating machine.

Abstract

A permanent magnet motor (2), and also a permanent magnet generator (102) comprising a plurality of phase windings, a control system (16) and a commutation circuit (6) is described. The commutation circuit (6) is operative for controlling a timing of a current supplied to the phase windings in dependence upon an angular position of the permanent magnet motor (2). The control system (16) is operative to supply a current to an individual of the phase windings in a current pulse event occurring within a commutation event. The duration of the current pulse event is less than the duration of the commutation event and the proportion of the commutation event for which the current is supplied to the individual of the phase windings is determined so as to control the speed of the motor (2).

Abstract

An electrical controller for electric rotating machines is provided. A control system for electric rotating machines transmits a controlled quantity of current to or from different windings of the electric rotating machine at any given time. Furthermore, the amplitude of the current is independently variable of the timing and duration of the transmission of the current to or from the windings. This allows increased control of the electric rotating machine and facilitates the operation of the electric motor at high mechanical and/or electrical speeds.

Abstract

An electrical controller for electric motors is provided. A control system for an electric motor comprises means for supplying excitation current to different windings of the motor at any given time. Furthermore, the amplitude of the excitation current is independently variable of the timing and duration of the application of the excitation current to the windings. This allows increased control of the motor and facilitates the operation of the motor at high mechanical and/or electrical speeds.
