Abstract

A light source using a light-converting material, in particular for the conversion of collimated or focused light, which does not operate solely on the principle of geometric concentration as known from the prior art, but which reflects light away from the interface between the surface of the conversion body (1) and the surroundings due to the high refractive index of the conversion body (1), possibly by means of an applied reflective layer. The light source uses the high refractive index and high transmittance of the phosphor material as the properties necessary to direct the light in the desired direction directly by the conversion body (1) itself. The light source emits collimated or focused intense secondary light, or a homogenised mix of primary and secondary light, or it may transmit supplementary light.

Abstract

A light source includes at least one solid-state laser source of a coherent
excitation
radiation, and at least one single crystal phosphor for at least partial
conversion of
the coherent excitation radiation into an extracted light primarily composed
of
wavelengths in the visible spectrum to the human eye. The at least one solid-
state
laser source of the coherent excitation radiation has the maximum emission of
light
wavelengths in the range of 340 nm to 480 nm. The extracted light from the at
least
one single crystal phosphor is primarily of white colour with a correlated
colour
temperature ranging from 2700 K to 10000 K. The at least one single crystal
phosphor is connected to a cooler. At least a portion of the at least one
single
crystal phosphor surface is roughened to create colour-homogenized scattered
extracted light and/or to maximize the extracted light emission in the desired

direction. The at least one single crystal phosphor is created with the oxide-
type
compound of the general formula (Ax, Lu1-x)a Al b O12:Cec.
