Abstract

A method of making an electrocaloric element includes dissolving or dispersing an electrocaloric polymer in an organic solvent having a boiling point of less than 100° C. at 1 atmosphere to form a liquid composition comprising the electrocaloric polymer. A film of the liquid composition is cast on a substrate, and the organic solvent is evaporated to form a film of the electrocaloric polymer. The film is removed from the substrate and disposed between electrical conductors to form an electrocaloric element.

Abstract

The presently disclosed embodiments utilize flow from a higher-energy portion of flow within the impeller flow path and inject it into the lower-energy portion of the flow path to re-energize the flow, delaying the onset of, or minimizing, large (and inefficient, entropy-generating) re-circulation zones in the flow field. By making a spanwise cut along the chord length of the splitter blade (variable blade clearance from leading edge to trailing edge), additional secondary flow occurs within the flow passages as the higher pressure flow on the pressure side of the blade can now spill over into the low-pressure suction side of the blade.

Abstract

A liquid replenishment system includes a reservoir, a first temperature sensor positioned in the reservoir at a full level, a second temperature sensor positioned in the reservoir at an add level, and a controller. The controller is connected to both the first and second sensors. The controller receives temperature signals from the first and second temperature sensors at first and second times. The controller sends an add liquid signal if temperature sensed by the first temperature sensor is substantially different at the first and second times and if temperature sensed by the second temperature sensor is substantially different at the first and second times. The controller sends a full signal if temperature sensed by the first temperature sensor is substantially the same at the first and second times and if temperature sensed by the second temperature sensor is substantially the same at the first and second times.

Abstract

A fuel system for an auxiliary power unit includes a mechanical fuel pump, an electric fuel pump, and a controller. The mechanical fuel pump provides fuel flow to the auxiliary power unit and has an output dependent upon an operational speed of the auxiliary power unit. The electric fuel pump is located in flow series with the mechanical fuel pump. The controller causes the electric fuel pump to circulate and thereby warm fuel prior to start up of the auxiliary power unit.

Abstract

A system (200; 300; 400; 500; 600) has a compressor (22; 200, 221). A heat rejection heat exchanger (30) is coupled to the compressor to receive refrigerant compressed by the compressor. An ejector (38) has a primary inlet (40) coupled to the heat rejection heat exchanger to receive refrigerant, a secondary inlet (42), and an outlet (44). A separator (48) has an inlet (50) coupled to the outlet of the ejector to receive refrigerant from the ejector, a gas outlet (54), and a liquid outlet (52). One or more valves (244, 246, 248, 250) are positioned to allow switching of the system between first and second modes. In the first mode: refrigerant passes from the heat rejection heat exchanger, through the ejector primary inlet, out the ejector outlet, to the separator; a first flow from the separator gas outlet passes through the compressor to the heat rejection heat exchanger; and a second flow from the separator liquid outlet passes through a heat absorption heat exchanger (64) and through the ejector secondary port. In the second mode: refrigerant passes from the heat rejection heat exchanger to the separator; a first flow from the separator gas outlet passes to the compressor; and a second flow from the separator liquid outlet passes through the heat absorption heat exchanger to the compressor.

Abstract

A capacitive strain sensor for sensing strain of a structure. The sensor includes a first section attached to the structure at a first location and a second section attached to the structure at a second location. The first section includes a capacitor plate electrically isolated from the structure and the second section includes two electrically isolated capacitive plates, both of the plates being electrically isolated from the structure. A flexible connector connects the first section to the second section. The capacitor plate of the first section is separated from the two capacitive plates of the second section by at least one capacitive gap. When strain is experienced by the structure, a change occurs in the capacitive gap due to relative motion between the first and second sections.

Abstract

A turbo machine includes a speed probe that is configured to detect a speed of a rotating feature. Engine controls are used by a processor to control operation of the turbo machine. The processor communicates with the speed sensor and receives the speed signal to produce a command signal. A detection module is arranged in parallel with the processor and communicates with the speed probe to receive the speed signal. The detection module compares the speed signal with data to determine whether the speed signal is reliable. In one example, the detection module bypassed the processor and sends a corrective command directly to an engine control device in response to an unreliable speed signal.
