Lubricant compositions comprise a synthetic ester that is a reaction product of at least one hindered organic polyol with one or more carboxylic acid where at least some (20%) up to 100% of the acids are branched. The lubricant compositions can provide improved oxidation stability and extended service life, as compared to a lubricant whose ester component is the reaction product of one or more hindered organic polyols and one or more carboxylic acids that are all linear, in applications that involve exposure to air, moisture, and/or high temperatures. These lubricant compositions are suited to a variety of lubricant applications, including, but not limited to air compressors, gear boxes, bearing sets, hydraulic systems, and chain drives.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for working up a mixture which contains esters of EPA and/or DHA with monohydric alcohols having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, esters of other fatty acids with monohydric alcohols having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and free cholesterol, wherein the method comprises adding a transesterification catalyst to the mixture, converting at least some of the free cholesterol into esterified cholesterol and thereafter distilling the mixture, wherein the distillation is carried out in such a manner that a product is obtained which contains EPA and/or DHA, both in the form of esters thereof with monohydric alcohols having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, in a higher relative amount, based on all fatty acids in free or bound form present in the product, than said mixture. In addition, the present invention relates to a product which is obtainable by the method according to the invention, wherein the product contains 10 to 99.99% by weight of esters of EPA and/or of DHA with monohydric alcohols having 1 to 6 carbon atoms and 0.0001 to a maximum of 0.3 % by weight of cholesterol in free or bound form.

Abstract

Polyols are reacted with acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid in the presence of acidic esterification catalysts and in the presence of polymerization inhibitors. Reaction mixtures that are liquid at the reaction temperature are used, said reaction mixtures being free of nonreactive solvents and/or azeotropic entrainers, and the resulting condensation water is removed from the gas phase of the reaction chamber. The invention is characterized in that (meth)acrylic acid is added in a metered manner in three or more portions with the following provisos: the quantity of each individual (meth)acrylic acid portion is set in the range of 5 to 40 mol% based on the total OH groups of the polyols that are used; the number of (meth)acrylic acid portions multiplied by the quantity of the (meth)acrylic acid portions (in mol%) that are used results in a value of at least 100 (mol%); the reaction temperature is set to a value ranging from 70 to 150 °C; and the water resulting during the reaction is removed from the reaction chamber under reduced pressure, the reduced pressure being at 600 hPa or less. Thus, (meth)acrylic acid esters are obtained from polyols, said esters having a content of species in which all the OH groups of the polyols are esterified equaling 80 mol% or more.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a process for the work-up of a mixture containing esters of EPA and/or of DHA with monoalcohols having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, esters of other fatty acids with monoalcohols having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms and free cholesterol, where the process comprises addition of a transesterification catalyst to the mixture, conversion of at least part of the free cholesterol into esterified cholesterol and then distillation of the mixture, where the distillation is carried out so as to give a product which contains EPA and/or DHA, both in the form of their esters with monoalcohols having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, in a higher relative amount, based on all fatty acids present in free or bound form in the product, than the abovementioned mixture. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a product which can be obtained by the process of the invention, where the product contains from 10 to 99.99% by weight of esters of EPA and/or of DHA with monoalcohols having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms and from 0.0001 to a maximum of 0.3% by weight of cholesterol in free or bound form.

Abstract

A method is described in which hydroxyacetals or hydroxyacetal mixtures are used for catalytic C-O-C linking reactions to form ethers, especially by telomerizing diene systems, wherein palladium-(0) complexes are used as catalysts, carbonylating olefins with rhodium-(0) complexes and reacting the same with the hydroxyacetals or hydroxyacetal mixtures, and dimerizing the hydroxyacetals or hydroxyacetal mixtures with ruthenium-(0) complexes while eliminating water. The method allows the carbon chain of the hydroxyacetal or hydroxyacetal mixture used to be extended by several C atoms, the calorific value of the products to be increased, and the evaporation temperature to be lowered. The products can be used as fuels, solvents, detergents, cosmetics, softeners, stabilizers, pharmaceuticals, fungicides and microbicides, flavors, intermediate products, and as additives in various fields of application.

Abstract

Disclosed are derivatives of isosorbide having formula (I) 1 represents hydrogen, or an alkyl or alkenyl moiety having 1 to 33 carbon atoms, which is saturated or unsaturated, branched or linear. This polymeric ether moiety can be a homopolymer or a copolymer, with x being the total degree of polymerization (DP). Preferred is a block copolymer composed of monomer A (DP=a), preferably ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, and monomer B (DP=b), preferably a saturated or unsaturated, branched or linear alkyl or alkenyl moiety having 1 to 33 carbon atoms, where x=a+b. x is a number from 0 to 50, with the proviso that R′ and R″ are not both hydrogen. The isosorbide derivatives are useful as components of detergent, cleanser, cosmetic and agricultural compositions.
