The flow leader ridge extends around the generally tubular body to form a substantially circular protrusion. The flow leader ridge has a first portion and a second portion each of which extends between a first point on the flow leader ridge and a diametrically opposed second point on the flow leader ridge. A thickness and/or a width of the first and second portions decreases or tapers between the first point and the second point of the flow leader ridge. The interior barrier layer of the multi-layer tubular article is distributed circumferentially and axially along a length of the multi-layer tubular article between the flow leader ridge and the end of the generally tubular body. A mold for forming the multi-layer tubular article is also disclosed.

Abstract

A method for cooling molded preforms includes transferring preforms of a first injection cycle from a mold to retained engagement on a take-out plate, the preforms having exterior surfaces and interior surfaces targeted for cooling. The preforms are released from cooling tubes of the take-out plate to retained engagement on cooling pins of a transfer shell spaced away from the mold. The transfer shell rotates and the preforms are released from the transfer shell to retained engagement in supplemental tubes of a supplemental cooling device. After a period of time the preforms are released from the supplemental cooling device and transferred back to retained engagement on the transfer shell. The transfer shell rotates to an unload position to eject the preforms from the transfer shell for evacuation from the machine.

Abstract

A method of operating an injection molding machine includes translating a movable platen from a closed position to a part transfer position by overshooting the transfer position in an opening direction away from a stationary platen to an over-travel position, and then translating the moving platen back to the transfer position in a closing direction, opposite the opening direction. Movement of a take-out device towards an advanced position, in which the take-out device reaches between mold halves carried by the stationary and movable platens, occurs while the movable platen is moving between the over-travel and transfer positions, prior to coming to rest in the transfer position. When resting in the transfer position, the method includes transferring molded articles from a first mold section mounted to the movable platen to retained engagement on the take-out device reaching between the platens.

Abstract

An apparatus simultaneously operates all split locking nuts of an injection molding machine two-platen clamp unit to engage and disengage the split locking nuts with clamp unit strain rods. Each split locking nut has opposed pivoting nut halves operated by coupling rotation of a rotating member through a predetermined angular range to the nut halves via translating members such as push rods. The push rods are pivotably connected to the rotating member and to the nut halves so that the direction of each push rod relative to the rotating member and to the nut half changes with rotation of the rotating member. A method of molding comprises: disengaging split locking nuts from strain rods; positioning a moveable platen assembly to abut mating mold components; simultaneously operating the split locking nuts to engage the strain rods; and, applying force to the abutted mold components sufficient for injection and cure of melt.

Abstract

Force from an electrically operated ejector mechanism of a molding machine is selectably supplemented by operation of second actuators. Second actuators are advantageously fluid (hydraulic or pneumatic) operated to supplement force provided by an electrically operated primary actuator when the ejector mechanism is driven to advance ejector members into cavities of a mold assembly. The second actuators may be enabled to be operated during automatically controlled execution of a machine cycle of operation and may be operated in response to operator selections when machine operation is controlled manually.

Abstract

An apparatus for injection molding comprises an injection unit comprising a plunger, the plunger being translated with accumulation of plasticized material in preparation for injection and being advanced to inject the accumulated plasticized material into mold cavities. At least one electric motor is engaged with the plunger to resist translation as melt is accumulated and to inject plasticized material into the mold cavities. At least one hydraulic actuator selectably operates the plunger during a pack and hold interval to supply supplemental force when force supplied by the electric motors is limited to maintain the operation of the motors within the applicable continuous duty rating thereof. The electric motors are advantageously selectably operatively engaged with the plunger to inject plasticized material into the mold cavities and the hydraulic actuators are operated to inject plasticized material into the mold cavities when the motors are not engaged therefore.
