An enhanced lottery media representation object such as a ticket, for example, permits a user to access certain desirable features using a communications device. In embodiments of the present invention, an improved physical lottery ticket is provided with one or more icons, such as code elements or graphic patterns, thereupon to enable a user with a properly enabled device to detect, such as by scanning or photographing the icon, or by maintaining the icon within a field of view, one or more of the icons to reveal one or more enhanced experiences via the device.
Templates of known forms are stored in computer system. The templates are digitized pixels on which connected component analyses are performed resulting in a first list of components. Five to ten of those components are selected to create an ordered feature list for each form. The computer system then captures an optical image of a form positioned on the top of a stack of forms. The optical image is digitized and stored in the computer (or processor) system as a captured digital image of pixels. A connected component analysis is performed on the captured digital image that results in a second list of image components. Image components on the second list are compared to those on the first list and then each succeeding feature in one of the ordered feature lists. If the comparison is successful, the form is known and other marks on the form may then be processed. If the comparison is unsuccessful, a new feature list is tried.

A method and system for calibrating optical reader systems employs a target with areas comprising linear gray scale levels. The gray scale levels include the darkest and the lightest scenes. The gray scale levels are illuminated by an array of LEDs and the light reflected from target impacts photo-transistors. The photo-transistors are biased in their linear ranges and the target is scanned while the LED drive current is changed. The photo-transistor responses to the different gray scale levels at the different LED drive currents are analyzed, and the LED drive current that produces a linear output from the photo-transistors over the gray scale dynamic range is selected. Several video channels may be used and their offsets and gains are normalized. Black offsets and black to white gain correction functions are generated for balancing or correcting each pixel. A triggering system and process for a form reader is shown using a histogram of the optical scene. The form reader is open on three sides with a camera facing a platen on to which a form is placed. The camera converts the light rays reflected from the platen into a video stream that is sent to a processor. A change in content of a first light intensity level contrasted to the content of a second light intensity level is used to determine when the form enters the scene. Illustratively, the first light intensity level represents black levels and the second light intensity levels represent white levels. A threshold is pre-determined that isolates the first light intensity content, and when the first light intensity content remains constant (after the presence of a form) the form is deemed to be still wherein the system may then read the information on the form.
