A safety latch (10) for a mud skip container includes a first latch (12) that is pivotal within a bracket (14) that is mounted to a top (13) of the container. The first latch includes a pivoting head (32) with a downwardly projecting catch (34) and an arm (36) connected to the head. The arm extends through an aperture (26) in the bracket and a spring (38) is disposed about the arm. The safety latch further includes a second latch (16) mounted to a pivoting lid (15) of the container; and, the second latch includes an upwardly projecting catch (54) on a head (52) of the latch. The head of the second latch is positioned over a pivot axis of the lid and positioned relative to the first latch such that the catches of respective first and second latches engage one another when the lid is opened.
