An anchor device may be connected to a personal safety line used by a worker, who typically is wearing a safety harness to which the line is attached. The worker may insert an anchoring mechanism portion of the anchoring device into a connection point, then activate a locking feature of the anchoring mechanism to affix it to the connection point. The locking feature comprises multiple jaws which are coupled to each other and to the apparatus so that they expand when tension is applied to the connection point of the personal safety line. The worker, secured in case of fall by the personal safety line, may move about freely, but should a fall occur, the added tension on the personal safety line will increase the force locking the mechanism to the connection point, thus increasing safety. To release the anchoring mechanism, the worker disengages or otherwise unlocks the anchoring mechanism.

A coupler to couple a D-ring from a harness to a fall arrest device connector provides walls to guide and contain the harness webbing whilst allowing it to move freely (reducing webbing wear) and does not necessitate the removal of the coupler, connector, or D-ring as may be required for harness size adjustment. The coupler has a circular passageway which runs through the length allowing a shaft of the connector to couple to the part whilst maintaining 180 degrees of swivel. The coupler also has a groove which runs along the length to fit onto a central bar of the harness D-ring. The design is such that, during a fall, should the device break, the webbing will remain securely coupled to the D-ring of the harness.

The portable fall protection device (10) essentially comprises a force reduction device. This force reduction device gradually absorbs a tensile force created within a safety line as a user falls from a height. One aim of the portable fall protection device (10) is to gradually arrest the descent of the user falling in a gradual controlled manner to prevent injury to the user. Furthermore, the portable fall protection device (10) is compact such that the portable fall protection device (10) can be constantly worn and carried on the back of the user without impinging on the tasks of the user. As a result of the structure of the portable fall protection device (10), each portable fall protection device (10) can be individually tested prior to use and can be re-used (and/or reset), if necessary after a fall. In addition, the capacity of the portable fall protection device (10) is adjustable and can be set by a manufacturer and/or operator in order to produce a bespoke device.
