A TRANSPORT LOAD CARRIER FOR A BAGGAGE HANDLING SYSTEM
The present invention concerns a transport load carrier (1) for a baggage handling system, such as a luggage handling system in an airport, said transport load carrier (1) comprising a platform (2) for receiving and accommodating a load, such as one or more items of luggage, a plurality of wheels (6) wherein at least one wheel is selfdriven by drive means, and wherein the orientation of the wheels is adjustable by adjustment means for rotating the load carrier or turning its transport direction with or without rotating the load carrier, and a control unit for controlling the drive means at the at least one wheel and controlling the adjustment means of the wheels for the execution of a load transport task. The invention provides a controllable gripper for a robot. A plurality of gripping members, e.g. suction cups, are arranged to engage with a surface of an object to be gripped. The gripping members are arranged in a controllable gripping configuration. A base part is arranged to be moved by a robotic actuator, e.g. a gantry type of robotic actuator. Two or more arms connected to the base part are slidably arranged along their lengths relative to the base part. Each arm has a gripping member at or near its distal end. A controllable actuator system is arranged to control position of the arms in different directions, relative to the base part, thus allowing various gripping configurations to be formed with respect to at least size. Especially, four arms of fixed length, each with a suction cup, may be actuated by one or two electric motors, so a to allow the four suction cups to form various gripping quadrangle sizes. This allows the gripper to be capable of gripping small and large objects in random order, since the gripping configuration can be rapidly changed. Still, the gripper can be formed rather simple with few elements, and yet it is flexible and can be very compact in a compressed state of the arms to allow navigation into narrow spaces, e.g. to grip an object in a 3D bulk of objects. The gripper is preferably mounted to a robotic actuator by means of a controllable rotation and tilting arrangement.
A robot system for picking randomly shaped and sized object from a continuously moving stream of objects in bulk, e.g. a 3D bulk, and placing the object singulated and aligned on an induction or directly on a sorter. A pick and place robot has a robotic actuator for moving a gripper with a controllable gripping configuration of its gripping members, e.g. four suction cups, to adapt the gripper for various objects. A control system processes a 3D image of objects upstream of a position of the pick and place robot, identifies separate objects in the 3D image, and selects which object to grip, based on parameters of the identified separate objects determined from the 3D image. Based on e.g. size and shape of the selected object to grip, the gripping configuration of the gripper is adjusted to match the surface of the object to grip for optimal gripping. The robotic actuator, e.g. a gantry type robotic actuator, is then controlled to move the gripper to a position for gripping the object, and afterwards move the gripper with the gripped object to a target position and with a target orientation to release grip of the object and thus place the object on an induction or directly on a sorter. An image after placing the object along with properties of the object determined from the 3D image can be used as input to a machine learning for online improving pick and place performance of the robot system, e.g. for online improving the algorithm for selection of which object to pick, and also for selection of the appropriate gripping configuration to match the object.
A sorter system with a cascade of pick and place robots picking randomly shaped and sized object from a continuously moving stream of objects in 3D bulk being transported on a feeder. The pick and place robots place objects directly on an empty space on the sorter, while the sorter is running. A control system processes images of objects upstream of a position of the pick and place robots and selects which object to grip for each of the pick and place robots. The pick and place robots may have Cartesian or gantry type robotic actuators, especially arranged with their main axes at an oblique angle with a transport direction of the sorter so as to facilitate acceleration of objects to the transporting speed of the sorter for release of the object on the sorter. The sorter and feeder may be parallel, e.g. placed close to each other and transporting objects in the same or opposite directions. The control system controls each of the robotic actuators to move the gripper to a position for gripping the selected object, and to move the gripper with the gripped object to a target position to release grip of the object and thus place the object directly on an empty space on the sorter.

Method for inducting and singulating items to a sorter
The invention provides a method and a system for inducting items to a sorter (SRT) from a stream of items (IT1, IT2), e.g. mail or parcels, arriving at a feeding conveyor (FC). A processor (PCR) executes a control algorithm (C_A) with at least information (I_1) regarding the stream of items arriving at the feeding conveyor (FC) as input. In response, the control algorithm (C_A) generates an output (O1) indicating where to place an item picked up by a robot (R1) from the feeding conveyor (FC). The control algorithm (C_A) selects between two or more of: 1) a first induction (I1) arranged for transporting items to the sorter (SRT), 2) an empty space (E_S) on the sorter(SRT), 3) the feeding conveyor (FC), e.g. singulating bulk items on the feeding conveyor (FC), and 4) a weighing unit (W1) arranged for weighing items. By controlling the robot (R1) accordingly, it is possible to provide effective use of existing pick-and-place robots as part of a sorter induction system, where a high capacity can be obtained with a small requirement for space. E.g. it may be possible to save space for inductions, compared to what is required for manual handling with the same sorting capacity, especially this may be advantageous for items with a maximum weight of 2-3 kg.

The invention provides a sorting mechanism arranged to empty or discharge a container for carrying a load, e.g. totes in a luggage handling system. The sorting mechanism has a plurality of tilting elements T1-T11 for receiving and transporting the container in a transport direction. The tilting elements T1-T11 are arranged neighboring each other, and they are individually tiltable by controllable tilting actuators, e.g. servo motors. The tilting elements T1-T11 are controlled in response to at least one position signal such that a group of at least two tilting elements T1-T11 perform a coordinated tilting motion, when the container passes the sorting mechanism. Each tilting element T1-T11 has a length of 30-50% of the container. The tilting elements T1-T11 are stationary, and the container is driven forward by belts on each of the tilting elements T1-T11.
