Electron Suppressor Electrode for Improved Efficiency and In-Situ Electron Monitoring
Back-streaming of electrons toward an ion beam source is prevented by disposing an electron suppressor electrode asymmetrically with respect to the ion beam and biasing a voltage of the electron suppressor electrode relative to a voltage of a target to prevent back-streaming of electrons to the ion beam source. The electron suppressor electrode can be either positively or negatively biased with respect to the target.
Provided are apparatuses and methods for providing power to a fission-type nuclear power plant by a reactor with a confining wall at least partially enclosing a confinement region within which charged particles and neutrals can rotate. A plurality of electrodes is adjacent or proximate to the confinement region. A control system having a voltage source applies an electric potential between the plurality of electrodes to generate an electric field within the confinement region to induce rotational movement of the charged particles and the neutrals therein. A reactant is disposed in the confinement region. Repeated collisions between the neutrals and the reactant produce energy and a product having a nuclear mass that is different from a nuclear mass of the nuclei of the neutrals and the reactant. The energy dissipates from the reactor to provide power to the fission-type nuclear power plant.
Methods, apparatus, devices, and systems for creating, controlling, conducting, and optimizing fusion activities of nuclei. In particular, the present inventions relate to, 5 among other things, fusion activities that are conducted individually or collectively on a very small scale, preferably on the nano-scale or smaller such as pico to femto scales, for the utilization of energy produced from these activities in smaller devices and for aggregation into larger devices.
Methods, apparatuses, devices, and systems for creating, controlling, conducting, and optimizing fusion activities of nuclei. The controlled fusion activities cover a spectrum of reactions from aneutronic, fusion reactions that produce essentially no neutrons, to neutronic, fusion reactions that produce substantial numbers of neutrons.
Fusion reactor designs and techniques are provided in which an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) system is coupled to a cylindrical reactor to generate ions within the reactor to form a weakly ionized plasma. An ion cyclotron resonance (ICR) system, also coupled to the cylindrical reactor, is further utilized to accelerate the ions radially in the cylindrical reactor with increasing circular trajectory. The ions are contained within a uniform magnetic field provided by a superconducting magnet coupled to the cylindrical reactor. As the ions are accelerated they also drive neutral particles within the reactor to the same energy level through the mechanism of ion-neutral coupling. Collisions of plasma particles with a target also create macroparticles to form a “dusty” plasma, in which the macroparticles contain multiple charges and masses which can sustain fusion reactions.

A fusion device produces fusion of neutral atoms and ions in an “aneutronic fusion” manner without neutrons as products utilizes strong ion-neutral coupling at high neutral densities. Ions and neutrals rotate together in a cylindrical chamber due to frequent collisions. High magnetic forces make the attainment of high rotation energy possible; the magnetic field in a medium can be set at very high values because of the absence of magnetic charges. The repeated acceleration by strong magnetic forces in the azimuthal direction makes possible very high ion velocity. Fusion takes place mainly between neutral particles. This approach can be applied to fusion with neutrons as well. Conventional fusion schemes and neutron sources can be realized using the principles described above in the generation of neutrals of high energies and densities.

Direct conversion of energy of charged particles from a fusion reaction is provided by passing the particles through an electric field. This form of direct electrical energy conversion may convert kinetic energy of high-velocity alpha particles (or other charged reaction products) to electrical energy. The alpha particles may have energy ranges in a range typical for fusion reactions (e.g., in the range of about 3 to 5 MeV).

A weakly ionized plasma of ions and neutrals is generated from a first reactant in a confinement region. Orthogonal electric and magnetic fields induce azimuthal rotation of the ions around a longitudinal axis of the confinement region, the azimuthal rotation of the ions imparting azimuthal rotation to the neutrals of the first reactant, and promoting repeated collisions between one or both of the ions and the neutrals with a second reactant. The repeated collisions produce an interaction between the neutrals and the second reactant that produces a product having a nuclear mass that is different from a nuclear mass of any of the nuclei of the neutrals and the second reactant.
