A sleeve applicator machine (100) is used to remove and open a sleeve (102) from a carrier (104) for application of the sleeve around an elongated object such as a wire. In a system in which a host device is in communication with a peripheral device through communications device connected to a USB port, the USB host device polls the communications device to constantly regardless of the power state of the USB communications device. While in the low power mode, the USB communications device generates NAK packets, indicating that the device has no data to send. The NAK packets are generated in hardware, thereby allowing the USB host continues operating while unaware of the state of the peripheral device. External events can be used to trigger the USB communications device to exit the low power state without communicating with the USB host, and without the USB host altering its behavior.

An improved guillotine cutter for a printer is disclosed. The guillotine cutter includes a guillotine blade having a cutting motion that helps to urge the cut media from the exit chute of the frame. This reduces the likelihood of the cut media becoming pulled into the frame of the cutter, requiring that the user fish the cut media out. The guillotine cutter further provides a frame having integrated bearing surfaces for supporting many of the movable components of the cutter. This minimizes the complexity of the assembly of the cutter, reducing the number of parts (by elimination of separate bearings and other such additional components) and time required to assemble the cutter.

A system and method is disclosed for monitoring and determining the amount of ribbon on a supply spool used in a printer. The system and method monitor the rotation of a drive motor to determine a change in useful life that is then used to update the ribbon cartridge useful life that is stored on a ribbon cartridge memory device of the ribbon cartridge. Rotation of the supply spool or take-up spool may be used to estimate the ribbon cartridge useful life when the stored ribbon cartridge useful life is undefined or inaccurate.
The present invention provides a media guide system for guiding media unwound from a roll of a roll assembly along a direction of roll feeding in a printer. The guide' system includes a guide base including a datum edge guide surface (76) and a plurality of edge guide receivers (78). Labels are permanently attached to a substrate (24), e.g., a tissue cassette, by use of a staking device (1). The device comprises a staker assembly (2) and a cassette fixture assembly (4). The cassette fixture assembly includes a slot (20) and a clamping assembly (31) for securing the cassette (15) within the device. The staker assembly includes a set of probes (72, 74) that are heated and sequentially moved into a position to burn a hole in a label (53) that is provisionally attached to the cassette, and then the substrate is melted and displaced through the hole to form a collar bond that permanently attaches the label to the cassette. The label remains attached to the cassette when exposed to harsh environmental conditions, e.g., high heat, high humidity, solvents, etc.
A removable spindle for use in a thermal transfer printer houses dual RFID reader antennas that are used to read an RFID tag attached to the core of the print media.
