Abstract

Embodiments herein relates to a Bisphenol A-free multi-layer biaxially oriented polyester (BOPET) film. The BOPET film has a release layer, which aids in the release of food. The BOPET film can be laminated to metals used in the manufacture of food containers with the outer release layer being exposed to allow a direct food contact between the surface of the outer release layer and food. More particularly, the invention relates to a novel outer release layer resin composition comprising an ultra-high molecular weight siloxane polymer and a polyethylene trephthalate resin; and an alkali-metal phosphate and a phosphoric acid compound added, during polymerization of the outer release layer resin composition, as a catalyst/additive package to the ingredients forming the outer release layer resin composition. A wax component is added in the outer release layer, for more robust release performance.

Abstract

A carrier film of thermoplastic polyester has releasable metal adhesive properties suitable for a metal transfer in which the polyester film is metalized and the metal layer is subsequently transferred to a permanent adhesive-coated substrate. The metal layer is in direct contact with the polyester carrier film and no intermediate release layer is present. Desired metal adhesion is provided by dispersing an suitable surfactant, and optionally, a hydrocarbon wax, uniformly into the polyester film. Surfactant on the outer surface of the carrier film modifies metal adhesion to the polyester such that the metal can be removed in a metal transfer operation.

Abstract

Embodiments herein relates to a Bisphenol A-free multi-layer biaxially oriented polyester (BOPET) film, for lamination on metal sheets, which could be used for food containers. The BOPET film has at least one outer release layer, which aids in the release of food, such as a high protein food source, when food is cooked and sterilized in direct contact with the outer release layer. The BOPET film can be laminated to metals used in the manufacture of food containers with the outer release layer being exposed to allow a direct food contact between the surface of the outer release layer and food. More particularly, the invention relates to a novel outer release layer resin composition comprising an ultra high molecular weight siloxane polymer and a polyethylene trephthalate resin; and an alkali-metal phosphate and a phosphoric acid compound added, during polymerization of the outer release layer resin composition, as a catalyst/additive package to the ingredients forming the outer release layer resin composition. A wax component can be added in the outer release layer, for more robust release performance.

Abstract

A metal transfer film of thermoplastic polymer includes a polymeric carrier film, a layer of metal to be transferred onto an article, and a layer of retention adhesive suitable for bonding the transferred metal layer to a surface of the article. The transferable metal layer is adjacent between the carrier film and the retention adhesive layer. Optionally, the carrier film has a releasably adhesive layer on the side in contact with the metal. The retention adhesive is a polyvinyl amine crosslinked with citric acid. The retention adhesive is deposited on the metal layer from a liquid solution and dried to a non-tacky, solid coating enabling handling of the metal transfer film in conventional film processing unit operations. The dry retention adhesive can be activated by the metal transfer operator remotely from the adhesive application process and provides significant oxygen, moisture and aroma barrier properties to the metal covered article.

Abstract

Embodiments herein relates to a Bisphenol A-firee multi-layer, such as a biaxially oriented polyester (BOPET) film, for lamination on metal sheets, which could be used for food containers. The BOPET film has an outer release layer, which aids in the release of food, such as a high protein food source, when food is cooked and sterilized in direct contact with the outer release layer. The BOPET film can be laminated to metals used in the manufacture of food containers with the outer release layer being exposed to allow a direct food contact between the surface of the outer release layer and food. More particularly, the invention relates to a novel outer release layer resin composition comprising an ultra high molecular weight siloxane polymer and a polyethylene trephthalate resin. Optionally, an alkali-metal phosphate and a phosphoric acid compound can be added, during polymerization the outer release layer resin composition, as a catalyst/additive package to the ingredients forming the outer release layer resin composition.

Abstract

A composite barrier film has a base layer of polyester with a barrier layer modified polyvinyl amine (mPVA). The mPVA is polyvinyl alcohol/polyvinyl amine copolymer crosslinked with citric acid and an optional additional crosslinking agent such as epichlorohydrin. The barrier layer can be applied by deposition of a reactive aqueous solution onto the base layer, heating and drying to remove water and crosslink the reactants. Excellent barrier properties of the film are obtained by applying and crosslinking the barrier layer during the transverse stretching steps of a biaxial oriented polymer film continuous fabrication process. Superior barrier properties are achieved with transverse stretching by a factor of about 3-4.

Abstract

This invention relates to an optically clear film of predominantly thermoplastic polyester base layer and a carbodiimide-crosslinked, polyester and polymethylmethacrylate blend primer layer. The base layer preferably has a particle-free core layer and outer layers containing nonpolyester, organic and/or inorganic particles. The primer layer is preferably applied to the base layer from solution that is organic solvent-free. The primer layer and base layer composite can be laminated with a protective layer of primarily acrylic polymer to form a solar control film. Functional additives, such as UV light blockers, can be present in various layers of the solar control film. Polymethylmethacrylate in the primer, especially in combination with crosslinking by the carbodiimide, provides the acrylic coated polyester base solar control film with notably reduced iridescence. Adhesion between the acrylic layer applied from organic solvent solutions and the polyester layers is durable in moist and warm service conditions.

Abstract

A multi-layer biaxially oriented high density polyethylene (OHDPE) film with a novel formulation which exhibits superior heat seal properties is disclosed. This improved formulation comprises a blend of a single grade of high density polyethylene (HDPE) or several grades of high density polyethylene (HDPE) with a nucleating agent (NA) used in the core layer to achieve a lower sealing initiation temperature, higher heat seal strength and broader sealing temperature range HDPE-based film that still exhibits typical properties of OHDPE films and a lower haze than conventional OHDPE films. The multi-layer BOPP film has additional layers such as a third polyolefin resin-containing layer, a metal layer, or combinations thereof.

Abstract

This invention relates to a highly optically clear, composite film having a predominantly thermoplastic polyester base layer and a primer layer of a polyester and polyurethane blend composition. The base layer preferably has an A/B/C layered structure with a substantially particle-free core layer B of polyester and outer layers A and C of polyester containing nonpolyester, organic and/or inorganic particles. The primer layer is preferably applied to the base layer from solution that is organic solvent-free and is crosslinked using a carbodiimide crosslinking agent. The primer layer and base layer composite can be laminated with a protective layer of primarily acrylic polymer for a solar control film. Various layers of the composite and solar control films can contain effective amounts of functional additives, such as UV light blockers. Polyurethane in the primer, especially in combination with crosslinking by the carbodiimide, provides the acrylic coated polyester base solar control film with notably reduced iridescence and durable adhesion between polyester and acrylic layers in moist and warm service conditions.

Abstract

A composite barrier film has a base layer of polyester or polyolefin with a barrier layer modified polyvinyl amine (mPVA). Superior barrier properties are achieved with transverse stretching by a factor of about 3-4 for polyester and 4-10 for polyolefin.

Abstract

A multi-layer biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film with a novel formulation which exhibits matte appearance is disclosed. This improved formulation comprises a blend of high density polyethylene (HDPE), medium density polyethylene (MDPE), low density polyethylene (LDPE) or linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) with polypropylene (PP) used in the core layer to achieve a matte appearance low gloss PP-based film that still exhibits typical properties of BOPP films with significantly lower haze than conventional matte films. The multi-layer BOPP film has additional layers such as a second polyolefin resin-containing layer, a metal layer, or combinations thereof.

Abstract

A method is presented for making releasable transfer film suitable to provide a metalized embossed composite onto a paper substrate without a release layer between the composite and a polymeric carrier layer. The transfer film includes a polymeric base layer, an embossing material layer and a metal layer. The transfer film is bonded to the paper substrate with an adhesive layer allowing the polymeric barrier layer to peel away from and to expose the metal-backed, embossing material layer. The substrate covered with the metalized embossed composite can be used to impart holographic style images to packaging, printed media products such as magazines.

Abstract

A monoaxially oriented film including a metallized layer; a gas barrier layer; and a propylene-based random copolymer and at least about 3 wt % of a low density polyethylene which is oriented at least about 2.5 times in one direction and exhibits excellent linear directional tear properties parallel to the orientation direction and excellent heat seal performance in terms of high heat seal strengths and low seal initiation temperature. This film formulation and orientation is suitable for pouch applications requiring high gas and moisture barrier, an “easy-tear” linear tear feature, and excellent hermetic seal properties.

Described are methods for producing a sequentially biaxially oriented thermoplastic film having balanced machine direction (MD) and transverse direction (TD) heat shrinkage properties. The methods can include extruding a film, orienting the extruded film in a machine direction, quenching the film, heating the film in an transverse orientation oven and transversely orienting the film, and allowing the film to relax in the machine direction at a machine direction tension lower than a machine direction tension of the film in the transverse orientation oven.

Abstract

The novel method can produce a grooved profile metalized polymeric film capable of generating a rainbow iridescent effect without mechanically embossing the film. The method calls for applying a thin uniform thickness coating layer of thermally deformable polymer composition on a thermally stable base layer. Process operating conditions are controlled to heat the composite coating layer surface effectively such that light diffraction-scale grooves of about 5,000-10,000 grooves/cm develop in the coating layer. The grooves are created by shocking the coating layer surface with a sudden burst of heat supplied by film metalization after coating layer application.

Abstract

A method reclaims metalized polymer film or mixtures containing metal and/or metal alloys into a metal-containing, polymeric film. The resulting film structure has better oxygen and moisture barrier properties when metalized than plain metalized polymer films. The polymer to be reclaimed, originates in sheet form, and is densified, as by shredding, pelletizing and/or re-extruding into fine particulate form such as chips or pellets. The reclaimed polymeric film can be used, in a range of concentrations, to produce biaxially oriented polyester film for metalizing.

Desired metal adhesion is provided by dispersing a suitable surfactant, and optionally, a hydrocarbon wax, uniformly into the polyester film. Surfactant on the outer surface of the carrier film modifies metal adhesion to the polyester such that the metal can be removed in a metal transfer operation.
