Abstract

The tread has a wearable thickness of material EMU and has raised elements delimited by grooves. Each solid part has a contact face and a cavity with a depth greater than 50% of the wearable thickness. Each cavity opens onto the contact face when new and is delimited by a wall surface and a bottom surface. Each wall surface deliminates a cavity that intersects the contact face along a corner edge contour that has a geometry that has a major axis which is at least 1.5 times the length of a minor axis when new. For any tread surface down to a predefined wear level, the level is at most 30% of the wearable thickness of material EMU, and the angle between the major axis and the circumferential direction is between 0 and 40 degrees. After the wear level, the angle is greater than 40 degrees.

Abstract

A tire mold equipped with features for protecting the tread mold segments from damage is described. One or more impact absorbers are positioned between tread mold segments and operate to preclude contact between the shoulders of the tread mold segments when such are biased back into their original position as a tire is removed from the tire mold. By precluding such contact, the tread mold segments are protected from damage that can affect the appearance of the cured tire.

Abstract

The method includes the step of running a cutting means between two threads of the reinforcing ply. The method proceeds with the steps of measuring; a discrepancy between an actual cutting line (A′B′C′) and a theoretical cutting line (ABC) is measured and determining a point of intersection of the actual cutting line (B′) with a reference longitudinal line (XX′) placed on the strip. The actual cutting line (B′C′) of that part of the rubber profiled elements that are not superposed with the reinforcing ply is longitudinally offset (Z) with respect to the theoretical cutting line (BC) so that the actual cutting line (B′C′) meets the reference longitudinal line (XX′) at the point of intersection (B′) of the reinforcing ply (A′B′) with the reference longitudinal line (XX′). The rubber profiled elements that are not superposed with the reinforcing ply are cut along the said actual cutting line.

Abstract

The machine presents a working zone that is defined in an upper part of a build sleeve which is fixedly mounted in a chassis. Within the working zone, the object is supported by a build plate which slides inside the build sleeve when driven in vertical translation by the head of an actuating cylinder which is placed along a central axis of the sleeve. The build plate is positioned inside a transport container which is arranged removably between the sleeve and the actuating cylinder. The machine also includes a means for moving the transport container vertically into contact with the build sleeve. The container is open at its top and at its bottom so that, when the actuating cylinder is actuated, the head thereof can transfer the plate between the transport container and the build sleeve which forms a build envelope around the plate.

Abstract

The present invention concerns methods and apparatus for spreading beads in a tire. Particular embodiments of such methods include positioning a tire adjacent an automated material abrading tool, the tire having: a central opening bounded radially by an inner bead diameter; an interior tire cavity extending radially outward from the inner bead diameter; and an interior tire cavity opening extending between opposing an annular beads of the tire, the cavity being positioned between the central cavity and the interior tire cavity. Such methods may also include securing at least a portion of the first bead of the tire and positioning a tire spreader within the central opening of the tire, the tire spreader having a bead engaging portion for engaging a portion of the second bead generally opposite the secured portion of the first bead.

Abstract

A tire tread having a layered design is provided. In a first layer of the tread, sipes extend transversely to provide traction in the first stage of the wear life of the tread. In a second layer of the tread, the width of the sipes along the circumferential direction is increased to provide for improved traction in a second stage of the wear life. The increased width is provided by a void that opens to a circumferential groove only along one end. Because the void opens only along one end, a decrease in acoustical effects such as drive by noise can be provided.

Abstract

The present invention comprises tire treads having sipes or other voids formed of non-curable inserts, as well as methods for forming sipes or other voids within a tread using non-curable inserts and apparatus for performing the same. Such methods include providing an uncured tread having a width and a thickness bounded by an outer side and a bottom side. Such methods further include providing a strip of non-curable material, the strip having a width and a length. Furthermore, such methods include inserting the strip of non-curable into the tread thickness from the tread outer side and to a predetermined depth within the tread thickness to form a void-forming insert within the tread thickness. Finally, these methods include curing the tread with the non-curable strip arranged within the tread thickness. The inserts may be folded, which may occur as the strips are inserted into the tread or prior to such insertion.

Abstract

Disclosed is an apparatus and methodology for detecting contact within a monitored area. A piezoelectric sensor is attached to one end of a detector which is positioned for contact by passing items or individuals. The detector may correspond to a plurality of parallel, rubber calendared cables or a strip of polycarbonate resin. Body deformations induced into the detector upon contact travel to the piezoelectric sensor and are detected as strain coupled to the piezoelectric sensor. The apparatus and methodology may be employed to detect vehicular traffic along travel paths, human contact with walls or floors, manufactured product contact with delivery systems or any other physical contact by animate or inanimate objects or individuals.
