The invention provides a process for preparing anhydrous lithium bromide, comprising the steps of converting an aqueous suspension of lithium carbonate with hydrobromic acid into a solution of lithium bromide; removing residual carbon dioxide from the solution by gas-stripping, wherein the solution has acidic pH; neutrali zing the acidic lithium bromide solution by addition of lithium hydroxide to form lithium bromide brine with a nearly neutral pH; and recovering anhydrous lithium bromide from the brine.
