Abstract

A process for removing selenium from water is described. Through a biological reduction process, selenium +6 species are reduced to selenium +4 species. A coagulant is mixed with the water and as a result, solids having complexation binding sites are formed. The reduced selenium +4 species is adsorbed onto the complexation binding sites of the solids. Thereafter, the solids having adsorbed selenium +4 species is separated from the water and ultimately separate from the process. The resulting effluent is subjected to a second biological treatment under aerobic conditions which converts residual selenium and organo-selenium to selenate.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a process for reducing hardness and organic matter concentrations in water. The water being treated is directed into and through an upflow reactor containing a media. As the water moves up the reactor, the media is fluidized. At least one softening reagent is added to the water in the reactor, resulting in an increase in pH and the precipitation of hardness. The precipitated hardness compounds are attached on the media. To enhance the reduction of organic matter in the water, a coagulant is mixed with the water upstream of the softening reactor. As the water flows upwardly through the reactor, the coagulant reacts with organic particles in the water, causing the organic particles to bind and form floc. Downstream of the reactor, the water is subjected to a filtration process that removes the floc containing the organic matter.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a biological filtration process for water loaded with nitrogenous pollutants in order to reduce the global nitrogen content of said water, characterised in that it comprises a first step of nitritation and filtration carried out in a first aerated biological reactor, a second step of deammonification, denitrification and filtration carried out in a second non-aerated biological reactor, and a step of evaluation of the ratio of the nitrite content to the ammoniacal nitrogen content of the water at the outlet of the first reactor. When this ratio is greater than a predetermined stoichiometry value, the process according to the invention comprises a step of addition of water to be treated to the water originating from the first reactor so as to obtain, at the inlet of the second reactor, a mixture having a ratio of the nitrite content to the ammoniacal nitrogen content that is close to the stoichiometric ratio of the Anammox reaction.

Abstract

System and process for cleaning media in a vessel includes directing a cleaning liquid into the vessel. A fluidizing pump draws the cleaning liquid from the vessel and returns a portion of the cleaning liquid to a fluidizing nozzle that is directed downwardly into the vessel. The fluidizing nozzle discharges the cleaning liquid in a jet stream that contacts the media causing the media to move upwardly in the vessel and become fluidized. The media is continuously fluidized and agitated for a time. In the process, contaminants associated with the media are separated and become contained in the cleaning liquid. During this process, most of the media is confined while within the vessel.

Abstract

A method and apparatus for a Coanda effect-induced tube settler assembly lamellae cleaning system for raw water or semi-potable drinking water treatment clarifier. A tangential compressed air source is injected from compressed air tubes near J-shaped support deflector beams. The combined high pressure air from a high pressure fixed air grid and waste water fluid flow stream in a main waste water stream to be clarified, creates a Coanda-effect fluid inducing turbulence when used in conjunction with cross-sectionally J-shaped deflector beams. This combined fluid flowstream provides hydrodynamic cleaning pressure axially through the tubes' lumen of the tube settler assembly within a clarifier cell basin enclosure.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a side stream deammonification process where deammonification is performed by a non-continuous flow integrated fixed film activated sludge sequencing batch reactor (IFAS SBR) without the need of employing an external clarifier. More particularly, the present invention entails a single reactor designed to operate as an IFAS SBR or a moving bed bioreactor (MBBR). With the design of the single tank, the two operation modes, MBBR and IFAS SBR, are interchangeable depending on the treatment needs.

Abstract

A system and process for concentrating a lithium stream is disclosed. The lithium stream is directed to a reverse osmosis unit which produces a concentrate containing lithium compounds. The RO concentrate is directed through two pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) modules connected in series. The two PRO modules further concentrate the RO concentrate and at the same time yield a diluted brine that is effective to drive an energy recovery device. The RO concentrate leaving the PRO modules is directed to an osmotically assisted reverse osmosis (OARO) module which also further concentrates the RO concentrate.

Abstract

A method is disclosed for concentrating and purifying an eluate brine and producing a purified lithium compound. An extraction eluate, rich in lithium, is directed to a nanofiltration unit or a softening process that removes sulfate and/or calcium and magnesium. Permeate from the nanofiltration unit or the effluent from the softening process is directed through an electrodialysis unit. As the lithium-rich solution moves through the electrodialysis unit, lithium, sodium and chloride ions pass from the solution through a cation-transfer membrane and an anion-transfer membrane to concentrate compartments. A dilute stream is directed through the concentrate compartments and collects the lithium, sodium and chloride ions. The electrodialysis unit also produces a product stream which contains non-ionized impurities, such as silica and/or boron. Concentrate from the electrodialysis unit is subject to a precipitation process that produces a lithium compound that is subsequently subjected to a purification process.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a system and process for treating a feedwater wherein the system includes at least one RO or nanofiltration unit that receives a feed under high pressure and produces a concentrate that is directed to and held at low pressure in a concentrate accumulator. Generally the permeate or the inlet feedwater is maintained at a constant flow rate. Periodically the system is switched from a mode 1 or normal operating process to a mode 2 where the concentrate is drained from the concentrate accumulator. However, in mode 2, the feedwater is still directed into the system and through the RO or nanofiltration unit which produces the permeate and the concentrate.

Abstract

A high recovery variable volume reverse osmosis system where the volume of concentrate cycled through the RO system is reduced in response to recovery levels increasing. By reducing the volume of concentrate cycled through the RO system, this reduces the cycle time of highly saturated concentrate passing through the RO system. Reducing the cycle time of concentrate passing through the RO system tends to minimize or reduce membrane scaling.

Abstract

Apparatus for separating grit from a grit-loaded liquid matrix while retaining organic solids in suspension, including an inlet for admitting liquid matrix into the apparatus, an outlet for removing grit-lite liquid matrix from the apparatus main chamber, and a vortex system for removing separated liquid matrix grit from the apparatus. The grit settling main chamber defines upper and lower subchambers communicating with each other through a central aperture. A fluid flow speed gradient is established between the apparatus fluid inlet and outlet. An Eddy type fluid dynamic component is added, providing combined enhanced coarse grit and fine organics discrimination and separation. The Eddy fluid dynamic component may consist of a trio of stationary fresh water supply force fed eductors. Each eductor produces a fresh water fluid flow interacting with the liquid matrix fluid flow inside the upper subchamber, whereby Eddy-type turbulences are generating promoting fine, liquid matrix grit particle separation from the liquid matrix.

Abstract

A process for treating frac flowback that contains barium, naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) and hardness for minimizing the amount of sludge produced that contains hazardous levels of NORM by employing a dual stage precipitation process. In the first stage a sulfate source is mixed with the frac flowback and barium sulfate and NORM is precipitated, the frac flowback is subjected to a solids-liquid separation process to produce a first effluent and a first sludge. In the second stage hardness is precipitated from the first effluent by addition of an alkali reagent, said first effluent is also subjected to solids-liquid separation producing a second effluent and a second sludge. The first sludge is recycled and mixed with the frac flowback and the sulfate source in a sufficient amount to maintain the NORM concentration in the second sludge at or below a threshold level.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a method of treating sludge containing phosphorus, ammonia and magnesium and enhancing the dewaterability of the sludge. The sludge is directed into a biological fermenter operated under anaerobic conditions. By controlling the temperature of the sludge in the fermenter or the hydraulic retention time of the sludge in the fermenter, phosphorus, ammonia and magnesium is released from the solids in the sludge into a liquid forming a part of the sludge. Sludge from the fermenter is subjected to a solids-liquid separation process that produces a concentrated sludge and a liquid. The concentrated sludge or separated solids is directed to a thermal hydrolysis reactor that thermally hydrolyzes the concentrated sludge. After thermally hydrolyzing the concentrated sludge, the concentrated sludge is directed to an anaerobic digester that anaerobically digests the concentrated sludge.

Abstract

The present invention entails a method of treating an ion exchange regenerant stream containing selenate and removing the selenate from the regenerant stream through an oxidation-reduction process where selenate is reduced to selenite and the selenite is adsorbed onto an adsorbent which, in one embodiment, comprises iron oxide or iron oxyhydroxide. In particular, the method includes catalytically reducing the selenate to selenite in a selenate reduction reactor by reacting iron powder with the selenate in the presence of a nickel powder, which functions as a catalyst, to form selenite which is then adsorbed onto the iron oxide or iron oxyhydroxide.
