Abstract

We describe a way of detecting delamination of a laminated structure that is heated by DC powered heaters by passing the source and return wires that supply current to the heaters through a toroidal transformer core. Should there be a breakdown in the laminations, current flowing through the heater will flow into the structure, resulting in less current being present in the return wire than in the source wire. The current imbalance between the source and return wires causes the transformer core to saturate. Using the core saturation, caused by the DC current imbalance, the delamination (or imminent delamination) of the laminated structure can be detected.

Abstract

The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for detecting the presence of water or ice on a structure, for example on the surface of an aircraft. A plurality of heaters (202 - 214) are thermally coupled to a structure (for example on the back of a wing) (104) in order to detect the presence of water or ice on the structure. The heaters are arranged adjacent one another from a region of a leading edge (106) of the structure (that is exposable to an impinging airflow) and extending aft of the leading edge of the structure. The heaters, which may be controlled individually, are supplied power that is sufficient to heat the surface of the structure to substantially the same temperature. A controller senses the power required for the heaters to achieve the same surface temperature at the respective regions. By comparing the power consumed by a heater that is aft of the fore- most heater (214), and the power consumed by a heater fore of the aft-most heater (210), a determination of the presence of water or ice can be made if the power consumed by the heater that is aft of the fore- most heater is different to the power consumed by the heater that is fore of the aft- most heater.

Abstract

We describe an ice protection system used for removing ice and/or other accretions from a structure. An actuator, coupled to a structure, is driven to generate vibrations in the structure. A controller drives the actuator using a signal that comprises a frequency chirp over a first period of time, and the controller controls the frequency chirp and the first period such that vibrations generated in the structure by the actuator propagate through the structure to coincide at a desired area of the structure remote from the actuator to remove ice and/or other accretions from the desired area of the structure.

Abstract

A link assembly has a pair of mechanical links pivotally connected to rotate relative to one another about a pivot axis. A cable protector is provided as part of the link assembly. Abstract

The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for detecting the presence of water or ice on a structure, for example on the surface of an aircraft. One or more separate heaters are thermally coupled to a structure (for example on the back of wing leading edge skins). A controller applies power to the heaters to heat the different regions of the surface of the structure. The controller detects the presence of water or ice by comparing the power required to achieve the desired surface temperature, and a reference power, where the reference power is the power required to heat the surface of the structure to the same temperature if the structure were in a dry air environment (i.e. an environment devoid of water). If the power consumed by the heater is greater than the reference power, the presence of water or ice is inferred.

The present invention generally relates to proximity sensor monitors and proximity monitor systems incorporating proximity sensor monitors. A proximity sensor monitor measures the impendance or other electrical characteristics of a proximity sensor component to determine the presence of a target. Abstract

Each of a plurality of acoustic sensors (acoustically coupled to a structure for monitoring) is connected to a network bus system via a preamplifier for capturing, processing and reporting acoustic events in a structure, for example aircraft structures. Each of the preamplifiers processes the acoustic event signals received from the sensors when an acoustic emission resulting from an acoustic event (defect in a structure, impact on the structure etc), and passes digital processed signal data relating to the detected acoustic event to a Remote Data Concentrator over the network for collation. The collated data is then stored and/or further processed (at a later time or in near real-time) to determine the source and/or location of detected acoustic emissions in the structure.

Abstract

A linkage for guiding a flexible cable between two structures. The linkage comprises a proximal arm with a proximal pivot joint for coupling the proximal arm to a first one of the two structures; and a distal arm which is coupled to the proximal arm by one or more intermediate pivot joints. The distal arm is shaped to follow a three-dimensional curve along a majority of its length. Shaping the distal arm to form a three- dimensional curve along a majority of its length enables the distal arm to pass through a relatively small aperture as the linkage is adjusted between its retracted and extended positions. It also enables the proximal arm to move in a locus of movement which does not interfere with other system components. The linkage can be used to guide a flexible cable between any two structures, for instance a fixed aircraft wing and a slat.

Abstract

Current measurement apparatus comprises a shunt resistor (1) located between two terminal members (5, 6), each connected electrically to a respective end (4, 3) of the shunt resistor, and each extending over substantially the whole of an adjacent side face of the shunt resistor. Electrically insulating, thermally conductive material (8, 9) is provided between each side face of the shunt resistor (1) and the terminal members (5, 6), and serves to provide a thermal path for heat exchange between the shunt resistor and the terminals. An ice protection system is disclosed for a structure having at least one surface to be protected from a range of icing conditions, the ice protection system comprising: at least one heater device (108, 110, 112), arranged in thermal contact with said at least one surface,- at least one temperature sensor (314) for outputting at least one temperature signal, said at least one sensor being in thermal contact with at least one said heater device; and a control system (600) for controlling the heat output of said at least one heater device using said at least one temperature signal, wherein the control system is operable to control the heat output of said at least one heater device in order to maintain the temperature of the or each heater device at a substantially constant temperature.

Abstract

A buoy is provided with first and second fixed hydrodynamic surfaces (15,16). When the buoy is towed through water by a tether (17), the first hydrodynamic surface (15) generates a downward force that reduces with increased speed through the water. The second hydrodynamic surface (16) generates an upward force that increases with increased speed through the water so that the buoy dives up to an upper critical speed through the water speed and rises beyond said upper critical speed through the water. The downward force of the first hydrodynamic surface (15) overcomes the buoyancy of the buoy at a lower critical speed through the water above, which the buoy dives. The hydrodynamic surface (15) comprises first fins (15) mounted on an outer casing (1) of the buoy and are spaced angularity and extend parallel to the centre axis of the buoy which is substantially aligned with the direction of towing. The second hydrodynamic surface (16) comprises second fins (16) mounted on the outer casing arranged upstream of the first fins (15) in the direction of towing. The second hydrodynamic surface (16) is set at an angle of incidence such that it creates a stalled flow condition at said upper critical speed through the water.
