Abstract

Provided is a protective element wherein malfunctions do not readily occur despite the magnitude of the current that may flow therethrough. This protective element 10 comprises a positive electrode 22, a negative electrode 24, an inter-electrode conductor 26, a joining material 28, a compression coil spring, a thermal energy supplying part 32, and a holding body 34. The inter-electrode conductor 26 is disposed spanning across the positive electrode 22 and the negative electrode 24. The joining material 28 joins the inter-electrode conductor 26 to each of the positive electrode 22 and the negative electrode 24. The compression coil spring applies a separation force onto the inter-electrode conductor 26. The thermal energy supplying part 32 supplies thermal energy to the joining material 28. One end 60 of one plate-shaped part 50 of the positive electrode 22 protrudes to the exterior of the holding body 34. The one plate-shaped part 50 is plate shaped. One end 64 of another plate-shaped part 54 of the negative electrode 24 protrudes to the exterior of the holding body 34 in a different direction from that of the one plate-shaped part 50. The other plate-shaped part 54 is disposed on the same plane as the one plate-shaped part 50. The other plate-shaped part 54 is plate shaped.

Abstract

The invention reduces the size of a protective element. The protective element comprises a conductor 54 and a case 12. The conductor 54 fuses when the integrated Joule heating value reaches a predetermined value or greater. The case 12 houses the conductor 54. The case 12 comprises an external shell portion 30 and a reinforcement portion 32. The conductor is housed in the external shell portion 30. When a force is applied onto the external shell portion 30, the reinforcement portion 32 restricts the deformation of the external shell portion 30. If the case 12 comprises the external shell portion 30 and the reinforcement portion 32, the risk that the case 12 becomes damaged is reduced even if the capacity of the case 12 has not been increased proportionally to the volume of the object to be housed therein. In this manner, a reduction in size becomes possible relative to a protective element whereof the capacity of the case 12 has been increased proportionally to the volume of the object to be housed therein.

Abstract

Provided is a protective device which has large rated voltage and rated current and is able to sufficiently suppress the occurrence of arc during operation and fully open a circuit. A protective device is characterized by comprising: (i) a protective element which comprises a first temperature fuse and a resistor, and in which the resistor generates heat by the passage of an electric current through the resistor when abnormality occurs, and the first temperature fuse operates by this heat and interrupts an electric current; (ii) a PTC element; and (iii) a second temperature fuse, and in that the second temperature fuse is electrically connected in series with the PTC element, the first temperature fuse of the protective element is electrically connected in parallel with the PTC element and the second temperature fuse, and when the abnormality occurs, the PTC element trips and generates heat by operating the protective element, and the second temperature fuse is blown by this heat.
