An integral polymer grid with a plurality of interconnected, oriented polyethylene terephthalate strands and an array of openings therein is made from a polyethylene terephthalate sheet-like starting material having perforations or indentations therein that form the openings when the sheet-like material is uniaxially or biaxially stretched. The grid has a higher tensile strength to weight ratio and a higher creep reduced strength to weight ratio than corresponding ratios associated with a grid made from a non-polyethylene terephthalate starting material.

Method of making an integral geogrid from a coextruded multilayered polymer starting material
An integral geogrid includes a plurality of interconnected, oriented strands having an array of openings therein that is produced from a coextruded multilayer polymer sheet starting material. By virtue of the construction, the coextruded multilayer sheet components provide a crystalline synergistic effect during extrusion and orientation of the integral geogrid, resulting in enhanced material properties that provide performance benefits to use of the integral geogrid in soil geosynthetic reinforcement.

A roll of grid material for mine roof support, and a mining machine in combination with such a roll, in which the roll has bands of adhering material injected or otherwise forced into the roll in spaced locations along the roll's width. The adhering material interconnects the overlapped layers within the roll and is sufficiently strong to hold the grid material in the rolled configuration for transport and storage, and yet is readily pulled apart in response to sufficient manual or mechanical pressure applied against the roll, or tension applied to the unwound portion thereof, so as to enable the grid material to be incrementally unwound and installed in the mine. The rolls can be installed using a range of mining machines without need for any specialized dispensing or other apparatus mounted on the machine and without the need for any mechanical device to control unwinding.

A roll of grid material for mine roof support, and a mining machine in combination with such a roll, in which the roll has bands of adhering material injected or otherwise forced into the roll in spaced locations along the roll's width. The adhering material interconnects the overlapped layers within the roll so that the roll is self-resistant to unrolling. Also provided is a method of making such a roll including the steps of winding a length of polymeric mesh material into a roll and applying an adhering material to the mesh material. The adhering material has sufficient strength to hold the roll in a wound configuration and prevent the roll from free-wheeling or unwinding due to the roll's own physical properties.

Light weight oriented net assembly for oil capture and containment
A light weight oriented net or netting assembly is provided for oil capture and containment. The netting assembly is made by biaxially stretching or orienting starting materials to form a pattern of oriented strands and integral junctions that, while being light in weight, is also strong enough to be used to capture and remove oil from contaminated water without an outer stabilizing jacket. The assembly is preferably made from oriented polypropylene netting that is folded, gathered, bunched and/or otherwise layered upon itself on the order of 16-64 times and then crimped in one or more locations to secure the netting layers in a bow tie or tubular configuration that forms net cavities and an open cell structure to capture and contain oil that has been dispersed in water. Oil in the netting assembly can then be removed, such as by pressing or other removal process, after which the netting assembly may be reused.
