Abstract

Disclosed embodiments include apparatuses, systems, and methods for providing a sheath tip with an angled distal face to conform the sheath to a surface of tissue toward which the sheath is being extended to potentially help reduce or avoid tissue damage upon extending a sheath to convey an elongated instrument for sampling or treatment. In an illustrative embodiment, an apparatus includes a sheath tip positionable at an end of a sheath configured to convey an elongated medical instrument to a location adjacent a detection range of a detecting device. The sheath tip includes a distal member that extends a finite distance beyond the end of the sheath. The distal member is detectable by the detecting device when the end of the sheath is within the finite distance of the detection range of the detecting device.

The handle includes portions connected proximal ends of the sheath, the medical device and the stylet and a chamber portion connected to the actuator. The chamber portion includes a volume of space configured to volumetrically connect to at a lumen of the medical device, the sheath or the stylet and a plunger device configured to be slidably received within the chamber portion. The plunger device is able to pneumatically isolate a proximal portion of the volume of space from a distal portion of the volume of space. Proximal movement of the stylet and the plunder device cause a suction effect (i.e., reduced pressure) at the distal end of the sheath, the medical device and/or the stylet.

Abstract

A medical instrument having a handle with a clamp that is configured to maintain the instrument in two different operational modes. The medical instrument includes a needle, a sheath, a sheath handle, a needle actuator and a locking device. The distal end of the needle actuator is connected to the proximal end of the needle. The distal end of the sheath handle is connected to the proximal end of the sheath. The locking device restricts distal movement of the needle actuator relative to the sheath handle when the medical device is placed in one of two operational states. In a deactivation state the distal end of the needle is housed within the distal end of the sheath. In an activation state the distal end of the needle is distal from the distal end of the sheath.

Abstract

A medical instrument having an aspiration needle and handle device. The handle device controls the force required for a user to activate the needle and provides a higher force to initially activate and a lower force to continue sliding. Grooves at either end of the activation act as locking elements which provide feedback with a "pop" sound at either end of the travel. The handle also supports "one-way" manufacturing of the handle assembly, with an O-ring passing over a larger diameter shaft during initial assembly, thus preventing disassembly.

Abstract

A device for providing a fiducial marker(s) within or near a target tissue (e.g. nodule, tumor or other) within a patient. The present teachings provide a device with a handle device, a catheter with a distal end and a proximal end coupled to the handle device, a needle slidably received within the catheter, a stylet slidably received within the needle and a fiducial marker received within the needle. The needle includes a distal end and a proximal end coupled to the handle device. The stylet includes a distal end and a proximal end coupled to the handle device. The fiducial marker includes a proximal end and a distal end. The fiducial marker is in a first shape state inside the needle. The fiducial marker transitions from the first shape state to a second shape state upon expulsion from the distal end of the needle. The distal end of the stylet is in mechanical communication with the proximal end of the fiducial marker when the proximal end of the fiducial marker remains within the needle. The distal end of the stylet is mechanically disconnected from the proximal end of the fiducial marker during a fiducial marker delivery state.

Abstract

Devices and methods for measuring size of airways to lung are disclosed. A light- based endoluminal sizing device can comprise a centering tool, a light source, and a marker. A size of an airway can be approximated or determined based on a distance between the marker and the light source when light from the light source intersects the marker at an interface between the marker and the airway wall. In some cases, the size of the airway can be approximated from observing an intersection between a light pattern and the airway waif.

Abstract

Systems and methods for mechanically heated catheter tips are provided. The systems include, for example: a catheter body (110) with an axial lumen (121); a catheter tip (170) with at least some of the tip constructed out of a high-friction, thermally- conductive material; a friction producing plug (130) disposed in the axial lumen of the catheter tip and constructed at least in part out of a high-friction material; a drive wire (140) running through the axial lumen of the catheter body being connected on the proximal end to a power source (180) and on the distal end to the friction producing plug. Methods include using the drive wire to rotational!)' or axially translationally move the friction producing plug within the catheter tip. The friction produced by the movement of the friction producing plug and the inner wall of the catheter tip generates heat which can be conducted outward by the thermally conductive material.

Abstract

An implantable device (10) for providing one-way flow of air through a lumen in a human lung to reduce the volume of air trapped in a diseased portion of the lung by occluding the lumen to prevent inhalation while permitting expiration out of the diseased portion. The implantable device (10) is deployable in the lumen with a catheter. The device (10) comprises an umbrella-shaped, one-way valve (14). The valve (14) is collapsible for containment within a catheter and expandable in situ when deployed to occlude the lumen. The valve (14) defines a longitudinal axis and comprises a plurality of metal struts (30), a resilient membrane (32), and a central post (34). The device (10) further comprises an anchor (12) for securing the implantable device (10) within the lumen. The anchor (12) comprises a tapered distal end (24) for penetrating the wall of the lumen, and a planar member (26) positioned to limit advancement of the anchor (12) into the lumen. The implantable device (10) further comprises a mechanism (16) connecting the one-way valve (14) to the anchor (12). The mechanism (16) is disposed along the longitudinal axis when the device (10) is collapsed. The mechanism (16) is configured to permit the valve (14) to be oriented at an angle to said anchor (12) when deployed. Accordingly, the anchor (12) can be positioned in a section of the lumen that is at an angle to a section of said lumen in which said one-way valve (14) is positioned.
