Abstract

A self-contained laser scanner assembly is provided for measuring thickness of a refractory lining of a metallurgical vessel. The scanner assembly can include a shaft body having a proximal end, a distal end, and a middle segment positioned between the proximal and distal ends. A laser scanner, for measuring thickness of the refractory-lining of the metallurgical vessel, is positioned at the distal end of the shaft body. Operational equipment, including a cooling system, a battery, a wireless access point and/or a controller are disposed in a housing unit coupled to the shaft body at the proximal end of the shaft body. A heat protection shield is coupled to the shaft body between the housing and the middle segment of the shaft body. An interchangeable adaptor is configured to be coupled to the middle segment of the shaft body for allowing the shaft body to be removably attached to more than one type of a robotic arm used for the movement of laser scanners or a temperature probe, a sampling probe, or a camera. The interchangeable adopter allows a user to interchange the laser scanner assembly with a temperature probe, a sampling probe, or a camera.

Abstract

A hydrocarbon filtration system is provided for removing a contaminant. The filtration system includes a housing unit; a porous compressible filtration media disposing within the housing unit; and a lower and upper perforated plates in between which the porous compressible filtration media is disposed. At least one of the upper or lower perforated plate is movable relative to the other perforated plate for compressing and decompressing the porous compressible filtration media. A coalescence promoting device is positioned within the housing unit and above the upper perforated plate. The coalescence promoting device is configured to promote the coalescence of a hydrocarbon in the housing unit. Also provided is a method of treating hydrocarbon containing fluid by performing a filtration cycle followed by performing a wash cycle to wash a contaminant from the filtration media. During the wash cycle, an upper segment of the housing unit between an upper wall of the housing unit and the filtration media can be a gas-free zone.

Abstract

A method of making a purified precipitated calcium carbonate from lime mud can include admixing a lime mud cake with water and sodium carbonate to form a first slurry; heating the first slurry under conditions to age the slurry and form one or more of pirssonite, shortite, and gaylussite; separating a solid portion from the aged slurry; washing the solid portion under conditions sufficient to decompose the one or more of pirssonite, shortite, and gaylussite to a CaCO3 solid fraction and Na2CO3 solid fraction and to remove sodium salts; and admixing the CaCO3 solid fraction with water and a dispersant to disperse the CaCO3 solid fraction in water and form a dispersed slurry having a Brookfield viscosity of less than about 1000 cps at 100 rpm, thereby producing a dispersed slurry containing the purified precipitated calcium carbonate.

Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention are directed to methods of producing an absorbent composition and an absorbent composition. The absorbent composition may be used as an animal litter, but it is not limited to this use. Embodiments encompass methods of forming an absorbent composition by applying an outer coating to a plurality of core particles such that the outer coating at least partially coats the surface of the core particles, thus forming composite particles. In preferred embodiments, the core particles are colored and the outer coating does not cover all of the surface of the core particles.

Abstract

A method and system for measuring wear in the lining of a vessel in which undirected radiation signals are transmitted by at least two transmitters at known positions to a receiver at the device for measuring wear. The distances between the transmitters and receiver are determined based on the time of flight of the radiation between the transmitters and receiver. The location of the receiver at the measuring device is determined to be at a point on an arc of points at the distance calculated based on the time of flight of the signal from each of the transmitters to the receiver. The receiver is determined to be at the intersection of the two arcs of points at the distance calculated based on the time of flight of the signal from the each of the transmitters.
