Abstract

Systems and computer-implemented methods of improving a patello-femoral response. A computing system operably coupled to a markerless navigation system classifies the knee anatomy of the patient into one or more segments, including the patella. The computing system further receives first simulation data of movement of the segmented patella at a first surgical phase, such as a pre-operative phase. The computing system receives second simulation data of the segmented patella at a second surgical phase, such as an intraoperative stage using a first implant type. The computing system generates comparison data based on a comparison of the first and second simulation data. The computing system analyzes the comparison data, along with patient-specific information, via a machine learning model to provide one or more recommendations to improve a patello-femoral response based on reducing, minimizing, or eliminating the differences between the first simulation data and the second simulation data.

Abstract

A soft anchor deployment system for tissue repair includes an insertion instrument having a shaft extending up to a distally facing surface. A tip member extends distally from the distal facing surface. A soft anchor is positioned on the tip member such that the tip member is disposed within and along a lumen of the soft anchor. A suture operatively couples to the soft anchor and to a tensioning actuator of the insertion instrument. Tension applied to the suture deploys the soft anchor from a first elongated state to a second expanded state. During deployment of the soft anchor, a distal end of the soft anchor slides along and over the tip member and the soft anchor is compressed against the distally facing surface such that the tip member extends distally from the distal end of the soft anchor.

Abstract

Methods, non-transitory computer readable media, and surgical computing devices that more effectively protect anatomical structures from resection during surgical procedures are disclosed. With this technology, a virtual protection area is defined in a reference frame by extending a line defined by an obtained set of coordinates in the reference frame in at least one direction. The reference frame is of a bone to be resected during a surgical procedure. Resection equipment is tracked during the surgical procedure to obtain a location of the resection equipment in the reference frame. A determination is made when the obtained location of the resection equipment is within the defined virtual protection area. The resection equipment is disabled when the determination indicates the obtained location is within the defined virtual protection area. Accordingly, this technology advantageously allows a surgeon to intraoperatively establish a protection area to facilitate automated protection of particular anatomical structures from resection.

Abstract

Methods, non-transitory computer readable media, and ultrasound imaging apparatuses and systems that facilitate improved ultrasound imaging that emphasizes structures of interest are disclosed. With this technology, position data for a transducer assembly is continuously obtained along with ultrasound scan data captured via the transducer assembly. Image processing techniques are applied to ultrasound images generated from the ultrasound scan data to identify structure(s) of interest included therein and highlight the identified structures on a composite representation generated from the ultrasound images. The intensity of portions of the resulting composite representation is then adjusted to reflect the time in which the associated ultrasound scan data was captured. The composite representation is then output to an augmented reality headset or superimposed over an image of the patient to facilitate improved visibility and relation of the structures of interest.

Abstract

Disclosed herein are systems and methods for planning a knee arthroplasty procedure. In one example, a surgical method includes intraoperative measurement of patient anatomical information of the knee and/or movement of the knee of a patient resulting from electrical stimulation of nerves or muscles to cause articulation of the knee. An electrical stimulation system may be attached to a patient to cause contraction/relaxing of muscles operative to cause articulation of the knee. Tracking elements may be associated with relevant knee anatomical structures, such as the proximal tibia, the distal femur, and/or the patella to track the movement of the knee components resulting from the electrical stimulation. Implant components may be selected, positioned, and/or orientated using the tracking information resulting from the electrical stimulation, thereby allowing for determination of a surgical plan based on intraoperative muscle-activated knee articulation, configured to emulate natural patient anatomy and kinematics.

Abstract

Implant delivery systems for delivering sheet-like implants include a delivery shaft, an implant expander, a sheath, and a sheet-like implant. In some embodiments, the delivery shaft has a proximal end and a distal end. The implant expander is mounted to the distal end of the delivery shaft. The implant expander includes a central portion and a plurality of leg portions radiating from the central portion. The implant expander is evertable between an unstressed configuration in which a distal surface of the implant expander defines a concave surface, and a first compact configuration in which the distal surface of the implant expander defines a convex surface. The implant expander has a first lateral extent when the implant expander is free to assume the unstressed configuration. The sheath defines a lumen having a lumen diameter. At least a portion of the delivery shaft is slidably disposed in the lumen. The lumen diameter is smaller than the first lateral extent of the implant expander so that the sheath holds the implant expander in the first compact configuration when slidably disposed therein. The sheet-like implant overlays at least a portion of the distal surface of the implant expander with portions of the sheet-like implant extending between the leg portions of the implant expander and the sheath. Methods of treating a rotator cuff of a shoulder are also disclosed.

Abstract

A bone plate incorporating a length adjusting elongate hole formed in a shaft portion thereof, along with corresponding methods of use. In one embodiment, the length adjusting elongate hole is configured to receive one or more bone fixation devices (e.g., bone screws). The bone fixation device positioned within the length adjusting elongate hole may be partially loosened, without removal, to enable the patient's bone to be adjusted (e.g., loosening the bone fixation device within the length adjusting elongate hole allows the surgeon to adjust the position of the patient's bone, and hence the bone fixation device coupled thereto, relative to the bone plate). Once properly adjusted, the bone fixation device positioned within the length adjusting elongate hole may be retightened. In various embodiments, the length adjusting elongate hole is arranged and configured so that, in use, each of the plurality of bone fixation openings remains available to a surgeon.

Abstract

An orthopedic augment (100) can be used where the patient's bone at an implantation site is structurally compromised to aid in securing the orthopedic prothesis at the implantation site. The orthopedic augment has, on an internal surface (2) thereof, cement fixation features (3) that receive an orthopedic cement therein and aid in resisting separation of the orthopedic prosthesis from the orthopedic augment. In addition, the orthopedic augment may include mechanical fixation mechanisms to engage the orthopedic prosthesis. Thus arranged, the orthopedic augment provides greater flexibility, in that it can be used in the form of a cone (e.g., cemented fixation) or a sleeve (e.g., mechanical fixation).
