Abstract

Various enhancements of tabbed seals are provided herein with enhanced grasping functionality. Such enhancements include an oversized tab structure for increasing the overall surface area of the tab. In some forms, the tab has been configured such that the overall gripping tab is larger, but a portion thereof is temporarily adhered to the lower laminate, such as during seal and/ or cap installation. Instead, the gripping tab includes a small free portion and then a second, temporarily bonded portion that can either release or rupture, permitting the overall grippable portion of the tab to be large.

Abstract

Tabbed sealing members providing a more robust top-mounted tabbed structure that, in many cases, can be used as intended even if over bonded to a container rim. In part, the tabbed sealing members herein provide robust tab strength due to a composite layer including an amorphous polymer positioned underneath the tab and a tab hinge joint. In some approaches, the tabbed sealing members may also provide tamper evidence at the same time in view of an optional internal fracture or rupture layer that fails internally by horizontally separating into two complete portions thereof.

Abstract

A seal for a container for comestibles, especially potable liquids, and in particular for use for sealing polyester containers such as bottles, which is suitable for passage through a PET recycling process, comprises a metal foil layer, a foam layer and a plastics film layer as well as a heat sealable layer below the foil. The foam is selected for its density and thickness so is to confer upon the seal a high buoyancy. The adhesion a between the foam and the foil is increased compared to currently available products, in order to prevent de-lamination between the foil and the foam during the recycling process.

Abstract

A seal (1) for a container for commestibles, especially potable liquids, and in particular for use for sealing polyester containers such as bottles, which is suitable for passage through a PET recycling process, comprises a metal foil layer (4), a foam layer (3) and a plastics film layer (2) as well as a heat sealable layer (5) below the foil. The foam is selected for its density and thickness so is to confer upon the seal a high buoyancy. The adhesion a between the foam and the foil is increased compared to currently available products, in order to prevent de-lamination between the foil and the foam during the recycling process.

Abstract

A sealing member (500) for a container comprises a heat actuated sealant or adhesive layer (522) for securing the sealing member to a container, a metal foil layer (510) over and covering and adhesively bonded to the heat actuated sealant or adhesive layer, and a polyethylene or polypropylene foam or film layer (508) over and covering and adhesively bonded to the foil layer. In addition, a first PET tab (506) defining layer lies over and covers at least a portion of, but is not adhesively bonded to at least part of that portion of, the polyethylene or polypropylene foam or film layer. Also a polypropylene film layer (504) lies over and covers and is adhesively bonded to both the portion of the polyethylene or polypropylene foam or film layer not covered by the first PET tab defining layer and also to the first PET tab defining layer itself, the bonds being established by an adhesive. resin (51S) and catalyst chosen to provide a high bonding strength sufficient to hold against a manually generated force. A second PET layer (502) lies, over and covers and adhesively bonds to the polypropylene film layer. The first PET tab defining layer and the portions of the propylene film and second PET layers immediately above and adhesively bonded to the first PET tab defining layer serve as a tab to facilitate removal of the sealing member from a container to which it has been adhered.

Abstract

A holographic sealing member for a container is designed for attachment to the rim of an opening in the container. The holographic sealing member comprises a holographic layer having an upper plastic layer on its upper side and a lower embossed image layer on its lower side. A sealant or adhesive layer is attached to at least those portions of the lower side of the holographic layer that are intended to come into direct contact with the container's rim when the sealing member is placed upon and is sealed to a container. A metal foil layer lies over and covers and is adhesively bonded to the upper side of the holographic layer and may be inductively heated to actuate the heat actuated sealant. A tab covers and is adhesively bonded to the metal foil layer and may be pulled to remove the sealing member from a container. After this sealing member is attached to a container, and when the tab is pulled to remove the sealing member from the container, almost the entire sealing member pulls away from the container, but those portions of the holographic layer's lower embossed image layer that are attached directly to the rim of the container by the sealant or adhesive layer remain attached to the rim of the container to form a hologram that runs around the container's rim.
