Abstract

An ergonomically improved vehicle ladder rack has the top of its side rail(s) flush with the top surface of the rear cross-bar so that a foot portion of a ladder being transported may be made to slide off from the rack without a need for lifting it. To prevent lateral shifting of the ladder during transport on the vehicle, an abutment finger is added to the rotatable rung clamping assembly. The abutment finger blocks lateral shifting of a ladder when the rung hook is engaging a ladder rung and is non-blocking when the rung is disengaged.

Abstract

Embodiments of the invention provide a fire extinguishing system including an electronic control unit in communication with a software library, a foam proportioning system including foam proportioning equipment, and a smart connector. The smart connector includes a controller, and the smart connector is connected to the foam proportioning equipment. The controller automatically initiates an authentication procedure when the smart connector is connected to the electronic control unit. The controller causes the electronic control unit to automatically unlock at least one routines in the software library after the authentication procedure is complete to enable control of the foam proportioning equipment.

Abstract

A compact, stand-alone fire-extinguishing system for use with a water source is disclosed. The fire-extinguishing system can include an engine, a pump, a foam tank, a flow meter, and a foamant adjustment valve. The flow meter can be a variable area flow meter and indicate an instantaneous concentration of a water-foamant solution. The foamant adjustment valve can be a needle valve. A head injector can be coupled to the pump. The head injector provides foamant to be mixed with water inside the pump to create a water-foamant solution. The fire-extinguishing system may also include an inlet mixing valve assembly and an unloader valve to recirculate the water-foamant solution.

Abstract

A rotary control for controlling an electromechanical device includes a body adapted to mount to a surface and an outer ring pivotally connected to the body. The outer ring has an outer perimeter with a generally undulating profile having peaks and valleys, and has an outer face with a plurality of protrusions extending from the outer face, with the protrusions substantially corresponding with the peaks. The rotary control also includes a sensor adapted to sense rotation of the outer ring and output a signal corresponding to the rotation, and a control adapted to receive the signal and control the electromechanical device in response to the rotation of the outer ring.

Abstract

Embodiments of the invention provide a foam proportioning system powered by a battery, with the system including a pump, a pump motor, and a solid state contactor. The solid state contactor includes a battery terminal connected to the battery, a load terminal connected to the pump motor, and an enable switch. The enable switch selectively connects the battery terminal and the load terminal in order to form a power line carrying a current from the battery to the pump motor. A state of the enable switch is based on the current being drawn through the power line by the pump motor. The enable switch is closed in order for the solid state contactor to provide power to the pump motor when the current through the power line is between about zero amps and about 80 amps.

Abstract

A school bus has a hinged stop arm, a bidirectional electric motor operatively connected to the hinged stop arm for pivoting the hinged stop arm between a stored position adjacent the school bus and a deployed position extending outwardly of the school bus, and a motor control module for controlling the bidirectional electric motor. A retainer arrangement is attached to the school bus for retaining the hinged stop arm in the stored position positively and a second control module is operatively connected to the motor control module. The retainer arrangement includes a servo motor and a lock member that is moved by the servo motor between a lock position retaining the hinged arm in the stored position and a release position allowing the hinged stop arm to be pivoted outwardly by the motor. The motor and the servo motor are operated by a common switch. The switch is moved to a first position when the hinged stop arm is in the stored position to move the lock member to the release position and after a predetermined time delay to automatically pivot the hinged stop arm to the deployed position. The switch is moved to a second position when the hinged stop arm is in the deployed position to pivot the hinged stop arm back to the stored position and after a predetermined time delay to automatically move the lock member to the lock position.

Abstract

A safety unit for use on vehicles such as school buses. In one embodiment, a housing is provided for the drive motor and related elements for moving a stop sign on the side of the bus between its retracted and extended positions. The housing has a removable cover to provide access to the drive motor and related elements, and the stop sign is mounted on a driveshaft that extends through a single opening in the bottom wall of the housing. In a second embodiment the safety unit is integrated with an access panel on the school bus.
