The invention relates to a method of fastening a rivet element to a workpiece which has a preshaped hole provided for the reception of a rivet section of the rivet element and which is made planar at least in the region around the preshaped hole. Prior to the fastening process, the workpiece is positioned at a well-defined spacing from a contact surface of a die by means of at least one spacer which is fixedly connected to the die for the reshaping of the rivet section during the fastening process, so that a gap is formed between a wall of the hole and a punch of the die, which is provided for the reshaping of the rivet section. A method for the attachment of a bolt element to a component is described. The bolt element has a head part having a contact surface and a shaft part extending away from the head part, the shaft part having a tip provided at its end remote from the head part, the tip merging into a thread cylinder, optionally via a cylindrical region. The bolt element is pressed with the tip to the fore against the component and the tip is pressed through the component until the side of the component adjacent the head part of the bolt element enters to contact the thread cylinder and the tip thereby generates a hole in the component. A component assembly comprises a sheet metal and a fastener element. A flange has a larger diameter and a shaft of smaller diameter extends away from the flange and merges at its end remote from the flange into a cylindrical rivet section. The fastener element is used with sheet metals with thicknesses in the range of 3 mm and larger. With thin sheet metal parts the sheet metal has a smooth pierced cylindrical opening with a diameter corresponding to the diameter of the shaft. The cylindrical rivet section is reshaped to a rivet bead contacting the sheet metal underside. Medium thickness sheet metal parts have a stepped hole with the hole region of larger diameter receiving the rivet bead. For thick sheet metal parts the sheet metal has a conical pierced hole and the cylindrical rivet section is reshaped to a conical rivet bead wedged in the conically diverging hole.

The volume of the annular groove is chosen in such a manner that across a range of sheet thicknesses adapted to the respective thread size there is room for the volume of the respective folded region of the rivet section inside the annular recess (80) that is formed by molding the sheet part (60) into the annular groove of the element and that it does not project beyond the side (82) of the molded sheet facing away from the annular contact surface.

A press-in element for pressing into a non-pierced or pre-pierced component, in particular a sheet metal part is described. The press-in element has a head part having a ring surface confronting the component and a neck part which projects away from the ring surface, i.e. from the component contact side. The head part further has a ring-like projection surrounding the neck part with a radial spacing and projecting away from the ring surface and the neck part has a radially outwardly projecting ring bead, which can be formed as a continuous ring bead or as a ring bead interrupted at points, with the apex of the ring bead having an axial spacing from the ring surface which is larger than the axial spacing of the apex of the ring-like projection from the ring surface, which lies radially within this projection and together with it and the ring bead forms a pocket which receives material of the component.
