Abstract

An improved cold spray gun apparatus and system, which prevents nozzle clogging and erosion of the nozzle material. The nozzle can be configured as a non- monolithic assembly that includes a passageway for spraying powder material. The passageway can include a converging section and a diverging section. Such an arrangement is, in part, a result of a selection of specific nozzle material for the diverging section and a cooling system. The improved cold spray gun enables applying coatings at high spray parameters (e.g., pressure up to 5 MPa, temperature up to and in excess of 1000°C), and can achieve high quality coatings, deposition efficiency, density, adhesion and cohesion, and other advantages. Additionally, the disclosed apparatus makes it possible to spray a wide range of powder materials in commercial applications without nozzle clogging or nozzle erosion during continuous operation.

Abstract

Disclosed is a cold spray device which can heat a powdered source material up to a temperature that stably improves the spray efficiency of the powdered source material and eliminates unstable elements, without impairing the operability of a cold spray gun. The carrier gas heater of the cold spray apparatus is constituted of a gas tube having a heating function, the gas tube further constituted of a heating resistor for generating electric resistance heat by electric current flow for heating of the carrier gas introduced therein. The gas tube having the heating function is constituted of a plurality of gas tube units arranged in series, wherein one gas tube unit is comprised of a heating resistor of a current flow path length of 1m-5m. The carrier gas heater is integrally affixed to the cold spray gun such that the center axis of the coiled gas tube units is parallel to the center axis of the cold spray gun, thereby improving operability.
